GM Receives $4 Million; Chrysler Still Waiting.

The US government paid out the first $4 billion in emergency loans to support General Moters, but a parallel rescue payment for Chrysler was on hold.

The government had completed the first $4 billion load to GM on Wednesday (Dec 31, 2008). The U.S. Treasury Department spokesperson said that they are working expeditiously with Chrysler to finalize that transaction and remain committed to closing it on a timeline that will meet near-term funding needs. Both GM and Chrysler have said they need the infusion of government cash to meet payouts to suppliers. A plunge in auto sales has drained their own cash holdings. The administration of President George W. Bush approved a $17.4 billion for GM and Chrysler in December 2008.
